Welcome to the Catholic community at Wayne State. We are "wide awake" and invite you to open your eyes and see what God has been doing in our midst!

Being Catholic is a way of life. Wayne State’s Catholic campus ministry exists to radiate Christ through His Church by growing in relationship with the students of Wayne State College and being present on their journey of human, spiritual, and intellectual formation. We provide a "home away from home."

This year, we join the college and celebrate together a centennial year. For over 100 years, the Wayne State College Catholic community has been offering students a way of being Catholic on a secular campus and in a secular world. As stated in a 1911 issue of "The Flame" (first student newspaper), the Catholic Club had big dreams and hopes: "The outlook for the coming year is excellent and under the state management of the school it is hoped that in a few years the Catholic Club will be one of the largest in the state, with a beautiful permanent club room in which to hold meetings."

Anticipating the centennial, we began an Anniversary Fund for the purpose of obtaining a "home of our own." In 2005 that one-hundred year old dream became a reality when the archdiocese helped purchase the current facility at 317 East 10th Street. The common name for the facility is the “Newman Center” thus keeping the name that was added in the 1930’s in honor of John Henry Newman, a 19th century cardinal who laid the foundation for Catholic Campus Ministry. His beatification this September 19th in England adds to the festivities of our centennial.

Through our student leaders, chaplain and ministry coordinator, we sponsor retreats, Bible study groups, and diverse other opportunities for prayer and to explore Catholic beliefs and practices. Our community gathers regularly for other social occasions that promote friendships. We sponsor service projects and mission trips.
