Helping the homeless
The Omaha Catholic Worker (OCW) is trying to purchase a house so it can expand its outreach to Omaha's homeless. OCW has identified a house in south Omaha that will meet its needs. Call 402.502.5887 if you are interested in helping OCW purchase this house and expand its service to homeless men.
Young adult Bible study
A Young Adult Bible Study on the Book of Revelation will be held on Sunday nights at St. Vincent de Paul Church-Omaha beginning Sunday, January 8, 7:00-9:00 p.m. The study runs for 8 weeks and the cost is $15 for materials. National Vocation Awareness Week
The Catholic Church in the United States will celebrate National Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW), January 9-14. The celebration heralds a week dedicated to promoting vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and education.
This distinctive week gives Catholics an opportunity to renew prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations.
People can visit the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Facebook page here during the week to see examples of clergy and religious. They also can view reflections under the Vocation Retreat Tab where each day a scripture passage, reflection and prayer will be posted. Resources for promoting National Vocations Awareness Week, such as prayer cards, Holy Hour materials, prayers of the faithful and bulletin-ready quotes, are available on the USCCB vocations webpage here.
UNO Art Gallery exhibit
Julie Green, an artist who teaches at Oregon State University, is bringing her art exhibit The Last Supper to the UNO Art Gallery, January 13-February 9.
The Last Supper is an on-going decades-long project in which the artist has painted on ceramic plates the last meal requests of death row inmates. This project began when Ms. Green noticed that final meal requests were announced in the local newspaper. Each plate represents a specific death row inmate; she has painted over 485 plates to date.
Lord, Teach Me To Pray
Part 1: Praying Christian Virtues is a 12-week program offered separately for men and women that introduces Ignatian prayer and spirituality. There will be an information night Monday, January 16, 7:00 p.m. at St. Gerald's Fellowship Hall. Fr. Robert Barron's Catholicism DVD Series
St. Thomas More (4804 Grover St.) will be hosting the Catholicism DVD Series in the Church on Mondays beginning January 30 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. The Catholicism series, hosted by Fr. Robert Barron, teaches what Catholics believe and why, while being immersed in the art, architecture, literature, beliefs, and practices of the Catholic tradition. Marriage Enrichment 2012
You are invited to attend an evening of reflection on the beautiful truth of marriage. Two evenings for couples will be offered in February: Thursday, February 9 at Christ the King Parish-Omaha or Friday, February 10 at Sacred Heart Parish Center-Norfolk. Each evening begins with Mass at 5:30 p.m., with Archbishop George J. Lucas as the celebrant in Omaha and Father Dan Andrews in Norfolk, followed immediately by a romantic candlelit dinner, wine, and dessert. This year's topic, In the Beginning: Human Love in the Divine Plan, will be presented by Damon Owens, nationally known speaker and 2011 Men's Conference presenter. The cost is $50 per couple. I and You = We: Culture of Life Physician/Couple Retreat, offered by the Pope Paul VI Institute will be held February 9-11, 2012 in Omaha.
