Starting a Senior Outreach Ministry
  1. Pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit
  2. Examine the needs of your parish and your elder parishioners
  3. Set a reachable project and goal with your team of colleagues.
  4. Discuss the project and a budget with your pastor and parish council.
  5. Discuss the ministry with other parish leaders.
  6. Does this ministry conflict with other ministries already established?
  7. Enlist the support of other parish leaders in establishing and promoting your ministry.
  8. Look at other “models” of similar ministry. Talk to other parish representatives.
  9. Examine your resources.
  10. Recruit through the bulletin and through personal phone calls.
  11. Accurately describe the ministry, the specific project, and time commitment to volunteers.
  12. Educate volunteers in an appropriate but not excessive amount of time.
  13. Decide upon a “term” or length of service for volunteers.
  14. Organize a system to keep track of referrals, hours spent in service, allocation of funds, etc.
  15. Reevaluate the ministry periodically.
  16. After a year or so, present the ministry to the parish council again for continued funding, support, feedback and development.
